SOS Médecins National Newsletter, July 10, 2017

Summary

  • In week 27 of 2017 (July 3–9), overall activity at SOS Médecins clinics remained stable across all age groups and was comparable to previous years during the same period, with the exception of those aged 75 and older (a slight increase of +6%).

  • Among seasonal summer conditions, against a backdrop of extreme heat in week 27, there was a surge in consultations for heat-related conditions (+125%) across all age groups. The age group most affected is children under 15 (+248%), followed by those aged 75 and older (+90%), and finally those aged 15–74 (+70%). Dehydration affects older individuals more, while heatstroke affects younger people. Also worth noting across all age groups is an increase in consultations for insect bites (+54%). Additionally, there has been a rise in consultations for meningitis (+38%)—which continues amid a seasonal epidemic—and asthma attacks (+25%) among children under 15. Allergies (+12%) are on the rise among children under two, as are burns (+37%) among those aged 15–74. The proportions of associated conditions remain similar to the previous two years, with the exception of meningitis, which is higher.

  • Most of the most common conditions are declining in week 27 among children and adults under 75 years of age. However, there is a notable increase in consultations among children under two years of age for viral syndrome (+12%). Among adults aged 75 and older, most conditions are on the rise.
