SOS Médecins National Newsletter, August 7, 2023

Key Points

In Week 31 (July 31 to August 6, 2023), activity at SOS Médecins clinics continued to decline among children and rose slightly among those aged 75 and older (+6.7%, or +426 visits).

Medical procedures for suspected COVID-19 are on the rise across all age groups and have re-entered the list of the 10 most common diagnoses at SOS Médecins: +84% across all ages (1,512 procedures in Week 31 vs. 822 in Week 30), with, by age group:

  • 31 cases in Q31 vs. 12 in Q30 (+158%) among those under 2 years old

  • 74 cases in Q31 vs. 63 in Q30 (+17%) among 2- to 14-year-olds

  • 1,271 procedures in Q31 vs. 642 in Q30 (+98%) among those aged 15–74

  • 132 procedures in S31 vs. 102 in S30 (+29%) among those aged 75 and older.

Significant increases were observed in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region (+284%, or +579 cases) and, with smaller populations, in Centre-Val de Loire (+100%, or +12 cases), Hauts-de-France (+86%, or +25 cases), Martinique (+60%, or +12 cases), and Occitanie (+39%, or +30 cases).

Most seasonal indicators and other monitored conditions are stable or declining among children, with a few exceptions (chickenpox and diarrhea in children under 2; abdominal pain and asthma in children aged 2–14).

Among those aged 75 and older, there is a slight upward trend—though with low case numbers—for most of the main SOS Médecins diagnoses (with the exception of cases involving deterioration of general health and deaths, which are down by 10%).

Regarding mental health, there was an increase in cases of depression among those aged 15–64 (+11%, or 25 more cases) and of anxiety (+26%, or 47 more cases) among those aged 75 and older.
