SOS Médecins National Newsletter, April 2, 2013
Activity at SOS Médecins clinics has remained stable nationwide for the second consecutive week, with a slight increase in activity toward the end of the week due to the three-day weekend. Case numbers remain slightly higher than during the 2010-2011 and 2011-2012 seasons for the same period. There has been a slight increase in activity among children under 5 years of age (+11%, +1,038 visits). At the regional level, activity has increased in the North region. The flu indicator has continued to decline for several weeks (-24%, 939 weekly cases nationwide), with case numbers comparable to those of the 2011-2012 season for the same period. It should be noted that the reasons for calls regarding flu-like symptoms remain stable in the Centre/Ile-de-France region. Among children under 2 years of age, bronchiolitis-related activity is stable and accounts for 3% (134 cases) of calls to SOS Médecins for this age group. This trend is comparable to previous seasons (2010–2011, 2011–2012) for the same period. The gastroenteritis indicator has remained stable over the past week across all age groups. This trend has been observed for several weeks now, with case numbers slightly higher than in the 2010-2011 and 2010-2012 seasons for the same period. The death rate has risen slightly to a level slightly higher than in the two previous seasons, but this difference is based on very small numbers (fewer than 60 deaths per day); this increase is particularly evident in the North and Southeast regions. The measles rate remains stable at a low level.Across all age groups, the most common conditions remain nasopharyngitis and gastroenteritis, as well as ear infections. The largest increase, among children under 15, is in diagnoses of bronchitis (+27%, +159 cases), and among adults, in diagnoses of urinary tract infections (+17%, +140 cases).
