Summary

In Week 10 (March 8–14, 2021), there was an increase in emergency department visits among 2- to 14-year-olds (+11%, or +5,179 visits), while hospitalizations remained stable. Emergency department visits and subsequent hospitalizations were stable in other age groups.

In Week 10, following a week of stabilization in Week 9, visits for suspected COVID-19 across all age groups increased (+6%, or +461 visits), as did their share of total activity (8,113 visits and a 3.2% share of activity in Week 10 vs. 7,652 visits and a 3.0% share in Week 9). Analysis by age group shows an increase among those aged 15–74 (+7%, or +419 visits), stabilization among those aged 75 and older (+3%, or +49 visits), and a slight decrease among those under 15 (-6%, or -7 visits).

Suspected COVID-19 is the fourth most common diagnosis among those aged 15–74 and the third most common among those aged 75 and older. The proportion of hospitalizations following a visit across all age groups remains stable at 58%. At the regional level, visits for suspected COVID-19 are on the rise in Île-de-France (+18%, or +367 visits), Pays de la Loire (+15%, or +31 visits), and to a lesser extent in Normandy (+7%, or +15 visits), Centre-Val de Loire (+7%, or +13 visits), Hauts-de-France (+6%, or +43 visits), Grand-Est (+5%, or +28 visits), and Brittany (+5%, or +7 visits). Since monitoring began on February 24, 2020, 395,664 emergency room visits for suspected COVID-19 have been recorded.

Among seasonal and common conditions, the following increases were noted in children: isolated fever (+10%, or 230 visits), gastroenteritis (+17%, or 340 visits), trauma (+7%, or 1,245 visits), abdominal pain (+20%, or +581 visits), and asthma (+29%, or +200 visits). There was an increase in skin infections (+10%, or +253 visits) among those aged 15–74, as well as an increase in strokes (+9%, or +118 visits) and heart failure (+8%, or +124 visits) among those aged 75 and older.
