Key Points
In Week 29 (July 17–23, 2023), emergency department visits and hospitalizations following visits decreased among children (-8%, or 5,963 fewer visits) and remained stable among adults.
Among adults, there was an increase in visits for several indicators, though the numbers were low to moderate. More specifically, among those aged 75 and older, there was an increase in visits for dyspnea and respiratory failure (+8%, or +100 visits), stroke (+6%, or +75 visits), cardiac decompensation (+6%, or +66 visits), and isolated fever (+6%, or +19 visits). Among those aged 15–74, there was an increase in visits for chest pain (+6%, or +502 visits) and, to a lesser extent, for viral meningitis (+14%, or +8 visits).
Across all age groups, there was an increase in visits—though based on small sample sizes—for suspected COVID-19 infection (+17%, or +84 visits), and for vomiting among those aged 75 and older and those under 2 years of age (respectively +22% and +6%, or +55 and +25 visits).
Regarding mental health indicators, there was a slight increase in suicidal acts among those aged 65 and older (+11%, or +17 visits).
