Summary

In Week 28 (July 12–18, 2021), emergency department visits rose slightly among adults (+3%, or 9,908 visits) and remained stable among children. Hospitalizations following emergency department visits remained stable across all age groups.

Visits due to suspected COVID-19 across all age groups continued to rise for the third consecutive week (+79% in Week 28 vs. +18% in Week 27 and +8% in Week 26). In total, there were 2,037 visits (vs. 1,140 in Week 28, or +897 visits), with the proportion of such visits also rising (0.6% vs. 0.4% in Week 27). This increase is observed across all age groups: children (+119%, or +43 visits) and adults (+77%, or +854 visits). The proportion of hospitalizations following visits across all age groups has decreased to 34% (vs. 41% in S27). At the regional level, emergency department visits for suspected COVID-19 are on the rise in all metropolitan and overseas regions except French Guiana and Mayotte. The sharpest increases are observed in: PACA (+138%, or +165 visits), Occitanie (+110%, or +158 visits), Île-de-France (+83%, or +212 visits), Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes (+118%, or +107 visits), and Grand-Est (+126%, or +67 visits). Since monitoring began on February 24, 2020, 505,637 emergency department visits for suspected COVID-19 have been recorded.

Several seasonal indicators are on the rise again after a decline observed in recent weeks. Specifically, increases are seen for conjunctivitis (+13%, or +146 visits), viral meningitis (+119%, or +25 visits), hyperthermia/heatstroke (+49%, or +35 visits) across all age groups, as well as isolated fever (+6%, or +73 visits) in adults and allergies in children aged 2–14 (+8%, or +48 visits) and those aged 75 and older (+24%, or +24 visits). There were also increases in bronchiolitis (+15%, or +162 visits) among children under 2 years of age and ENT infections among children under 2 years of age (+9%, or +899 visits) and adults (+19%, or +537 visits).
