Summary

In Week 07 (February 15–21, 2021), there was an increase across all age groups in emergency department visits (+6%, or +18,414 visits) and hospitalizations following visits (+4%, or +2,554 hospitalizations).

In Week 07, following the decline observed the previous week, visits for suspected COVID-19 across all age groups remained stable (+0.6%, or +40 visits), as did their share of total activity (6,746 visits and a 2.7% share of activity in Week 07 vs. 6,706 visits and 2.8% in Week 06). By age group, these visits increased slightly among those aged 15–74 (+4%) and those under 2 years old (+20%, with small sample sizes), while they decreased among those aged 2–14 (-30%) and those aged 75 and older (-6%). Suspected COVID-19 remains the 7th most common diagnosis among those aged 15–74 and the 3rd most common among those aged 75 and older. The proportion of hospitalizations following visits across all age groups remains stable at 58%. At the regional level, visits for suspected COVID-19 are on the rise in Île-de-France (+18%, or +235 visits), Centre-Val-de-Loire (+93%, or +119 visits), Hauts-de-France (+15%, or +72 visits), Grand-Est (+8%, or +46 visits), and Bourgogne-Franche-Comté (+9%, or +29 visits), as well as in Réunion (+20%, or +9 visits). Since monitoring began on February 24, 2020, 371,716 emergency room visits for suspected COVID-19 have been recorded.

Among seasonal conditions, the majority of indicators are on the rise. Thus, there has been an increase in visits across all age groups for ENT conditions (+7%, or +588 visits), gastroenteritis (+16%, or +239 visits), and acute bronchitis (+19%, or +115 visits), as well as for bronchiolitis (+23%, or +306 visits) among children under 2 years of age. Among children under 2 years of age and adults, there were also increases in visits for vomiting (10% and 13%, respectively), isolated fever (14% and 13%, respectively), and asthma (12% and 17%, respectively). Finally, there was an increase in visits for trauma (+9%, or 1,566 more visits) among children and for general malaise (+8%, or 619 more visits) among adults.
