Key Points

In week 18 of 2022, there was an increase in emergency department visits for suicide attempts and anxiety disorders among children and adults aged 65 and older. Rates remain high for suicide attempts and mood disorders among children and those aged 15–44.

Within the SOS Médecins network, cases involving anxiety and behavioral disorders are on the rise among those aged 15–44 and those over 15, respectively. The observed levels remain lower than those of previous years.

Week 18 (May 1–8, 2022):

  • Data on emergency room visits from the OSCOUR® network:

    • Among children, visits are on the rise for suicidal acts (+8%, or +13 visits) and anxiety disorders (+13%, or +30 visits) and are stable for mood disorders. For the indicators of suicidal behavior and mood disorders, the current level is similar to that of 2021 but remains significantly higher than in 2020 and 2019. The observed levels are comparable to previous years.

    • Among adults (aged 15 and older), visits are on the rise among those aged 65 and older for suicidal acts (+7%, or +9 visits) and anxiety disorders (+9%, or +38 visits), and remain stable for mood disorders. The observed levels are higher than in previous years among those aged 15–44 for suicidal acts and mood disorders, and comparable for other age groups.

  • Data on medical procedures from the SOS Médecins associations:

    • Among children, procedures for anxiety, depressive states, and behavioral disorders are within the range of fluctuations observed since the beginning of the year and at levels comparable to those of previous years.

    • Among adults (aged 15 and older), medical procedures for anxiety are on the rise among those aged 15–44 (+11%, or +50 procedures). In smaller sample sizes, procedures for behavioral disorders are on the rise among those over 15 (+166%, or +25 procedures). Treatments for depressive disorders remain stable. The levels observed for these indicators remain comparable to or even lower than those of previous years.
