Mental Health. Monthly Update, September 4, 2023.
Key points
In the emergency room:
Between weeks 31 and 35, emergency department visits for mental health indicators among children remained stable at a low level, consistent with trends observed since the start of the school break. The levels observed remained comparable to those of previous years. However, among 11- to 17-year-olds, rates of suicidal ideation were at the upper end of the range observed between 2020 and 2022.
Among adults, all indicators were down in week 35. Referrals for suicidal ideation remained at high levels, higher than in the previous three years since week 23, unlike referrals for suicidal attempts, which remained at levels comparable to those of previous years. Among other indicators, there was also a slight increase in visits for mood disorders and psychotic disorders in weeks 33–34 among 18–24-year-olds and 18–64-year-olds, respectively, at levels higher than those of previous years.
Within the SOS Médecins network, mental health indicators remained stable and at levels observed in previous years for all age groups, except for cases of anxiety among 18- to 24-year-olds, which were at higher levels than those observed in previous years.
