Studies on influenza and COVID-19 vaccination coverage among residents and salaried staff at social and medical-social institutions (ESMS), 2025–2026 season

Santé publique France is launching a survey on vaccination coverage against influenza and COVID-19 among residents and staff at social and medical-social care facilities (ESMS).

Background

During the 2025–2026 winter season, the flu and COVID-19 vaccination campaigns were once again conducted jointly, as outlined in DGS Urgent No. 2025_26 (PDF – 325 KB). The target groups for these two campaigns include, in particular, residents of nursing homes for dependent elderly individuals (Ehpad) and long-term care units (USLD), as well as professionals in the health and medical-social sectors.

Vaccination campaigns against these viruses began on October 14, 2025, for all individuals targeted by the recommendations.

A survey is being conducted by Santé publique France to estimate vaccination coverage against influenza and COVID-19 among residents and staff of medical-social care facilities (ESMS).

Objective

The objective of these studies is to estimate influenza and COVID-19 vaccination coverage among residents and staff at long-term care facilities for the 2025–2026 season.

Survey Schedule

This survey will take place from March 2 to March 22, 2026.

Survey Methodology

Survey of ESMS

This survey covers ESMS providing residential care for older adults, including nursing homes (Ehpad), residential care facilities for older adults (Ehpa), and independent living facilities, as well as residential care facilities for people with disabilities (adults, youth, and children), regardless of the facility’s legal status and including ESMS affiliated with a healthcare facility. However, facilities that accommodate populations other than the elderly or people with disabilities, as well as facilities without residential care beds, are not included in the scope of this survey.

Study participation and questionnaire completion: Surveillance of influenza and COVID-19 vaccination among residents and staff in ESMS facilities is conducted by Santé publique France via a questionnaire accessible through a dedicated online tool.

Data Collected

The information collected is kept to a minimum. It includes:

  • The total number of residents and salaried staff at the facility;

  • The number of residents and staff members who have been vaccinated against the flu since October 14, 2025;

  • The number of residents and staff who have been vaccinated against COVID-19 since October 14, 2025;

  • The number of residents and staff members who have not been vaccinated against COVID-19 due to a recent SARS-CoV-2 infection;

  • If possible, the number of staff members who have been vaccinated against the flu and against COVID-19 by professional category (e.g., doctors, nurses, nursing assistants, etc.);

  • As well as questions regarding measures implemented to promote flu vaccination among healthcare professionals.

The data to be entered into the online tool are presented in the survey questionnaire:

Instructions for entering data are described in the user guide:

Results
