The first gynecological visit
Because young women often dread their first gynecological exam, the Sparadrap Association, with support from the Adosen Health Prevention Association, MGEN, and Santé publique France, has produced a 20-page illustrated brochure designed to help take the fear out of this visit and encourage open communication between teenage girls and healthcare professionals. The brochure is aimed at girls aged 14 to 20 and addresses their main questions about what happens during a gynecological exam. In particular, it explains that confidentiality is respected and that, except in specific circumstances (pain, symptoms, or the girl’s request), a gynecological exam is not necessary during the first visit. Designed to best prepare young women and help them build a relationship of trust that will facilitate better gynecological care, the brochure aims to reassure them without trivializing or underestimating their difficulties in discussing intimate matters with a professional, undressing, and being examined. This document can be presented or distributed as part of: a sex education program in schools, an individual consultation, or a group information session (family planning clinic, school health office, teen center, adolescent clinic), or a medical consultation (general practitioner, gynecologist, midwife).
