Residents who are experiencing mental distress due to COVID-19 are now coming to us for help [Interview]
People experiencing psychological distress turn to mutual support groups (GEMs) to benefit from their experiential knowledge: GEMs are able to provide them with practical tools to overcome their difficulties or cope with them on a daily basis. Vincent Demassiet highlights the GEM’s major strength within the highly medicalized landscape of French psychiatry: “not remaining insular and [...] opening up as much as possible to the world, in order to fully reclaim our place as citizens.” The GEM aims to be a catalyst for society: talking about mental health to destigmatize it and ensure that this topic is no longer a taboo.People have realized that mental health concerns everyone and is not limited to the most well-known illnesses. With the onset of COVID-19, many have also experienced psychological distress. And today, people are turning to the GEM. These groups aim to be active agents in transforming psychiatry and patient care. Organizations like the GEMs enable substantial cost savings, as their efforts lead to a reduction in medication use and hospital stays.
