Measles Epidemiological Bulletin. Surveillance data as of July 3, 2019
Key Points
Since January 1, 2019, 1,938 cases of measles have been reported (vs. 2,572 cases during the same period in 2018), of which 566 (29%) were hospitalized (27 in intensive care), 138 cases (7%) complicated by pneumonia, and 2 cases of encephalitis, including 1 death (subacute encephalitis in an immunocompromised patient).
Measles virus circulation remains active, with 117 cases (on average) during weeks S18 through S25, compared to 77 cases (on average) during the previous 8 weeks.
86 departments reported at least 1 case during the period.
87% of cases occurred in unvaccinated or inadequately vaccinated individuals (out of a total of 1,367 cases, aged over one year and born since 1980, for whom vaccination status was known).
The occurrence of nosocomial cluster cases underscores the importance of keeping healthcare workers’ vaccination statuses up to date.
