Antibiotic Use in the Outpatient Sector in France, 2013–2023

Depending on the indicator used, antibiotic consumption in the outpatient sector declined slightly or remained stable in 2023 compared to 2022. Expressed as the number of defined daily doses (DDD) per 1,000 inhabitants per day, consumption stood at 20.9 DDD/1,000 inhabitants/day in 2023, representing a 3.3% decrease compared to 2022. Expressed as the number of prescriptions per 1,000 inhabitants per year, consumption stabilized in 2023 at 820.6 prescriptions per 1,000 inhabitants per year, representing a 0.2% decrease compared to 2022. In nursing homes without an in-house pharmacy (PUI), consumption stood at 39.3 DDD per 1,000 resident-days (R-days) in 2023 (-2.9% compared to 2022). In contrast, antibiotic prescriptions increased by 2.0% compared to 2022 and stood at 4.1 prescriptions per 1,000 ODN in 2023.
