Antibiotic Use in the Outpatient Sector in France, 2011–2021

The COVID-19 pandemic continued into 2021, but unlike in 2020, it did not lead to a reduction in antibiotic use in the outpatient sector. Nevertheless, the increase observed in 2021 was moderate enough that antibiotic consumption in 2021 remained below the level reached in 2019. Expressed in terms of defined daily doses (DDD) per 1,000 inhabitants per day, consumption stood at 18.9 DDD/1,000 inhabitants/day in 2021, representing a 4.9% increase compared to 2020. Expressed as the number of prescriptions per 1,000 inhabitants per year, consumption stood at 704.6 prescriptions per 1,000 inhabitants per year in 2021, representing a 6% increase. In nursing homes without an in-house pharmacy (PUI), antibiotic consumption and prescriptions decreased in 2020 and 2021, with a 10.3% decrease in daily doses per 1,000 resident-days between 2020 and 2021 and a 9.6% decrease in prescriptions per 1,000 resident-days.
