Suicidal thoughts and reported suicide attempts (indicators from the 2024 Santé publique France Barometer – ages 18–79)

  • The prevalence of suicidal thoughts in the past 12 months among 18- to 79-year-olds, reported suicide attempts in the lifetime, and reported suicide attempts in the past 12 months in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region were comparable to national levels.

Emergency department visits for self-harm (indicators from the OSCOUR® network 2024 – all ages)

  • The proportion of emergency department visits for self-harm was higher in the PACA region than at the national level.

  • Approximately two-thirds of emergency department visits were followed by hospitalization.

  • The primary individuals affected were girls and women aged 11 to 24, with higher proportions of emergency department visits than at the national level.

  • Within the region, Var was the department with the highest proportion of emergency department visits for self-harm.

Hospitalizations for self-harm (indicators from the SNDS PMSI-MCO 2024 – all ages)

  • The hospitalization rate for self-harm was lower in PACA compared to the national level, but a more pronounced increase was observed, particularly among women.

  • The main groups affected were girls aged 11–17 (for whom a sharp increase had been observed since 2020) as well as young women aged 18–24.

  • The highest hospitalization rate in the region was in the Hautes-Alpes department.

Suicide deaths (indicators from the SNDS CépiDc 2023 – all ages)

  • In 2023, the suicide death rate in Paca was comparable to the national level, with a decrease observed between 2022 and 2023.

  • Men over 45 were the most affected.

  • The highest death rates in the region were in the Hautes-Alpes and Var departments.
