Key Points

Recent Syphilis

  • Following an increase from 2013 to 2015, there was a decrease in the number of cases of recent syphilis in 2016, regardless of sexual orientation. However, this trend will need to be sustained in the coming years.

  • Men who have sex with men (MSM) account for 88% of reported cases. Among heterosexuals, men are affected about three times more often than women.

Gonococcal infection

  • The upward trend in gonococcal infection diagnoses continued in 2016, as reported by the RésIST surveillance network. This trend is primarily linked to a steady increase in gonococcal cases among MSM. The increase is less pronounced among heterosexuals, with rates having stabilized over the past three years, and men and women being affected in equal proportions.
