Descriptive epidemiology of reports of non-consensual sexual intercourse to the CeGIDD in the Alpes-Maritimes

Introduction – Free information, screening, and diagnosis centers (CeGIDD) play a key role in the prevention, screening, and diagnosis of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), as part of a comprehensive approach to sexual health. Since late 2022, the team at the CeGIDD in the Alpes-Maritimes (CeGIDD 06) has sought to systematize inquiries about experiences of sexual violence by dedicating specific time to this topic during consultations with all healthcare professionals. Objectives – This study aims to describe the profile of CeGIDD users in the Alpes-Maritimes who reported having experienced one or more instances of non-consensual sexual intercourse during their lifetime, within the context of strengthening the screening system. It also aims to estimate the prevalence of such violence among these users and to identify its determinants. Results – In 2023, 375 CeGIDD users reported having experienced one or more instances of non-consensual sexual intercourse during their lifetime, representing approximately 7% of all patients. Among these victims, a large majority were female (76%), with a relatively young average age. Approximately one in three victims reported using drugs, and two in three were not currently employed. Risky sexual behaviors and lower rates of contraceptive use were also observed. Conclusion – The profiles of the identified victims largely align with trends observed in the national literature. Nevertheless, several biases must be considered: partial screening (62% of patients), possible selection of patient populations linked to changes in healthcare provision (particularly gynecological care), and more detailed record-keeping for patients who reported violence. These factors underscore the need to further analyze screening practices and to strengthen the tools and conditions that enable better identification and care for victims.
