Health Monitoring During the Heat Wave in the Pays de la Loire Region. Update as of August 18, 2020.
Key Points
Between August 6 and 12, three departments were classified by Météo-France as under an orange heat wave alert (Maine-et-Loire, Mayenne, Sarthe), while the other two were under a yellow alert (Loire-Atlantique, Vendée). As of Wednesday, August 12 (4:00 p.m.), no department in the region is currently under a heat wave alert.
Total healthcare utilization: SOS Médecins calls for all causes saw a moderate increase during this period (across all age groups and for those aged 75 and older), as did emergency room visits and hospitalizations following emergency room visits. However, the observed values remained within normal fluctuations.
Healthcare utilization for the iCanicule composite indicator: all monitored iCanicule indicators saw an increase during and immediately following the heat wave alert, across all age groups as well as among those aged 75 and older, whether in terms of the proportion of SOS Médecins procedures (among coded procedures), the proportion of emergency department visits (among coded emergency department visits), the proportion of hospitalizations (among coded hospitalizations), or the hospitalization rate (among visits attributed to iCanicule). These increases remained moderate compared to heat wave alerts in previous years.
