Epidemiological Surveillance in the Pays de la Loire Region. Update as of November 30, 2023.

Key points

Bronchiolitis

  • Epidemic phase of bronchiolitis among children under 2 years of age in the region since Week 41. In urban areas, SOS Médecins calls for bronchiolitis among children under 2 years of age were decreasing in Week 47, while remaining at a high level. In hospitals, emergency department visits increased significantly in Week 47, now exceeding the activity levels reached during the peaks of previous seasons, except for the one observed in 2022–23. The hospitalization rate for bronchiolitis among all hospitalizations following an emergency department visit also rose sharply in Week 47, as did the RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) positivity rate reported by the virology laboratories at the Nantes and Angers university hospitals.

Covid-19

  • SOS Médecins calls for suspected Covid-19 tended to increase slightly in Week 47, while emergency department visits for suspected Covid-19 were slightly down. The positivity rate showed a slight increase since Week 46, which will need to be confirmed in the coming weeks, while remaining at a moderate level. The incidence rate remained stable in Week 47 (as a reminder, since July 1, 2023, only PCR-confirmed cases have been reported).

Influenza

  • The Pays de la Loire region was not in an influenza epidemic phase in week 47. However, indicators of healthcare utilization for flu-like illness (SOS Médecins and emergency department visits) increased slightly in week 47, while remaining at low levels. Three regions entered the pre-epidemic phase in week 47: Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Île-de-France, and Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur.

Acute Gastroenteritis

  • Healthcare utilization for acute gastroenteritis was at a low level in week 47.
