Epidemiological Surveillance in the Pays de la Loire Region. Update as of March 27, 2013.
Over the past week in the region:
There has been a sharp decrease in the number of elderly people visiting emergency departments, and the number of deaths has fallen back below the alert threshold. There has also been a sharp decline in the flu epidemic. All activity indicators (Sentinelles network, SOS Médecins, emergency department visits) remain very slightly above the epidemic threshold. During the three months of the epidemic, more than 205,000 people in the region consulted a general practitioner for clinical influenza (with a fever > 39°C). Since the start of the season, 69 cases of severe influenza (including 11 deaths) have been hospitalized in intensive care units in the region. The most recent cases observed involve individuals over the age of 60. Outbreaks of acute respiratory infections in nursing homes remain active (152 outbreaks since September). The average hospitalization rate during these episodes is 7.1%, and the case fatality rate is 2.7%.Cases of gastroenteritis among children under 5 years of age have remained at a high level for the past 3 weeks (SOS Médecins and the pediatric emergency department at Nantes University Hospital). These cases are associated with widespread circulation of rotavirus (circulation particularly evident in Brittany).
