Epidemiological Surveillance in the Pays de la Loire Region. Update as of March 1, 2017.

Over the past week in the region:

After 11 weeks of the flu epidemic, the number of flu-like illnesses (visits to SOS Médecins and emergency room visits) fell below the epidemic threshold for the first time this week.

Hospitalizations for severe flu in intensive care have been very frequent since the start of the epidemic (154 cases, 61% of which were in people aged 65 and older) and have been declining for the past 3 weeks.

Among people aged 75 and older, we continue to observe a slower decline in acute lower respiratory infections among emergency room visits, hospitalizations, and SOS Médecins consultations.

However, in nursing homes, the improvement has been notable over the past two weeks. Three new outbreaks of acute lower respiratory infections (ALRI) have been reported in the past week, bringing the total number of reported outbreaks among the region’s 583 nursing homes to 221 since early September.

Among children, the number of bronchiolitis cases seen in pediatric emergency departments and at SOS Médecins clinics has also decreased, falling below the epidemic threshold, except in the pediatric emergency department at Angers University Hospital.
