Epidemiological Surveillance in the Pays de la Loire Region. Update as of April 4, 2016.
Over the past week in the region:
Last week, the gastroenteritis outbreak continued to spread, particularly among children under 5 years of age, according to SOS Médecins, while cases in pediatric emergency rooms were declining. In nursing homes, clusters of gastroenteritis cases are on the rise (13 new outbreaks in one week). The viruses responsible are most likely rotavirus for young children and the new norovirus GII.17 in nursing homes. The flu outbreak has been on the decline for one week in terms of emergency room visits and for three weeks according to SOS Médecins. Sixty-eight cases of severe flu were hospitalized in intensive care units in the region. Half of them were aged 15 to 64. The proportion of type A viruses is rising among cases diagnosed by the virology laboratories at the Nantes and Angers university hospitals.Deaths among the elderly remain within the expected range for the season. The number of cases of invasive meningococcal serogroup C infections is significant, with 5 new cases, including 1 death, since the beginning of 2015. This number should be viewed in light of the insufficient vaccination coverage against meningococcal serogroup C in the region.
