Epidemiological Surveillance in the Pays de la Loire Region. Update as of April 10, 2013.

Over the past week in the region:

Significant decline in the flu epidemic: Most surveillance indicators have decreased. Influenza viruses (A and B) continue to circulate. Since the start of the season, 74 cases of severe flu (including 11 deaths) have been hospitalized in intensive care units in the region. The most recent cases are due to type B viruses. Outbreaks of acute respiratory infections and gastroenteritis in nursing homes are on the decline. Persistent cases of gastroenteritis among children under 5 years of age for the past 5 weeks (SOS Médecins and the pediatric emergency department at Nantes University Hospital). These cases are associated with significant circulation of rotavirus. Increase in emergency department visits (among children and the elderly) and deaths among those under 75 years of age. This needs to be confirmed next week.
