Exposure to psychosocial stressors in the workplace: results of the 2003 SUMER survey in the Pays-de-la-Loire region
Objective - The SUMER survey provides an assessment of employees' exposure to major occupational risks in France. This paper presents the results on psychosocial stressors from the 2003 SUMER survey for the Pays-de-la-Loire region. Method - The survey was conducted from June 2002 to the end of 2003. The three psychosocial dimensions of Karasek’s model (psychological demand, decision latitude, and social support) were assessed using the French version of the “Job Content Questionnaire” (JQC). Results - For the Pays-de-la-Loire region, 1,935 employees were included (1,110 men and 825 women), representative of the region’s workforce after adjustment by margin calibration. 26% of employees are exposed to high psychological demands while having low decision-making latitude to cope with them. Situations described as "work-related stress," whether or not associated with a lack of social support from colleagues or management, are particularly common in highly Taylorized industrial sectors (consumer goods, agri-food, intermediate goods), as well as in business services and transportation. Discussion - The study shows that situations of "work-related stress" and "work-related stress with social isolation" affect certain socio-professional categories more than others, particularly manual workers, retail employees, civil servants, and administrative staff. However, psychological distress at work has spread in recent years throughout the entire workforce and affects all socio-professional categories. A preventive approach to "work-related stress" requires action on work organization. Conclusion - By assessing exposure to certain occupational stressors, this study demonstrates the value of an approach focused on work organization as part of a prevention strategy. (R.A.)
