HIV and Bacterial STIs in Réunion. 2024 Report.
Key Points
HIV Infections and AIDS
HIV Surveillance:
Participation in LaboVIH: Since 2022, all laboratories have been participating in LaboVIH.
Coverage of diagnostic testing: Coverage of diagnostic testing has dropped sharply, from 92% to 55%.
HIV testing (LaboVIH / SNDS / VIHTest):
All data from the various surveillance systems show that HIV testing has risen sharply since 2022 in Réunion (SNDS data, data from LaboVIH and the VIHTest program).According to SNDS data, the screening rate is 144.1 per 1,000 people, higher than the rate for mainland France (82.0 per 1,000 inhabitants) (excluding the Île-de-France region).
It is higher among women than men, except for those aged 50 and older, but it is increasing across all age groups and for both genders.
The highest screening rates are found among women aged 25–49 (302.5 per 1,000 inhabitants) and women aged 15–24 (279.4 per 1,000 inhabitants), far ahead of men aged 25–49 (175.6 per 1,000 inhabitants).
Data from LaboVIH show the same trend (a marked increase in serological tests performed since 2022), as do those from the HIV Test program.
HIV Diagnosis (DO): The number of new HIV diagnoses in 2024 has risen sharply, from 38 in 2022 to 59 in 2023, reaching 101 in 2024. This marked increase between 2023 and 2024 primarily concerns MSM and heterosexuals born in France.
HIV Incidence and Size of the Undiagnosed Population: HIV incidence was estimated at 109 (95% CI: 48–169) in 2024, rising steadily since 2022 (42 [95% CI: 24–60]). The number of people living with HIV in Réunion who are unaware of their HIV status was estimated at 206 (130, 282) at the end of 2024.
AIDS Diagnosis: In Réunion, the number of AIDS diagnoses was declining in 2024 after two years of increase. There has also been an increase in the detection of HIV infection at an early stage.
Bacterial STIs: Chlamydia trachomatis (Ct), gonorrhea, and syphilis
In general, STIs are detected and diagnosed more frequently in Réunion than in mainland France.
SNDS Screening
Overall, screening is conducted far more frequently among women than men (except for syphilis screening among those over 50)
In Réunion, STI screening is on the rise.
SNDS Diagnosis
The diagnosis of Chlamydia trachomatis infections remains stable in Réunion, while that of gonorrhea and syphilis is increasing slightly. Generally speaking, these infections are diagnosed more frequently than in mainland France (nearly twice as often).
Chlamydia infections are diagnosed equally among both sexes in those under 25. Beyond this age group, they affect men much more than women. Regarding the diagnosis of gonococcal infections, it is nearly twice as high among women aged 15 to 25 as among men (and roughly equal for both sexes in other age groups). Finally, except among those under 25, where detection rates are comparable between men and women, syphilis is diagnosed more frequently in men.
In 2024, the three CeGIDDs in Réunion contributed to surveillance efforts.
