Health Monitoring in Réunion. Bulletin of March 27, 2026.

Key points

Smallpox B (Mpox)

  • 8 cases (including 4 imported cases) were reported in Réunion between S05 and S13/2026.

Leptospirosis

  • A seasonal resurgence of leptospirosis is currently underway at a high level: 102 cases in 2026.

Dengue and Chikungunya

  • 21 cases of chikungunya and 39 cases of locally acquired dengue have been detected since the beginning of the year, with clusters of dengue cases observed in Saint-Leu and Saint-Paul.

Malaria

  • Since December, there has been an increase in the number of imported malaria cases, primarily among travelers returning from the Comoros. Nine cases were reported in December and 19 in January, coinciding with the end of school breaks. A decline began in February (7 cases) and became more pronounced in March (1 case to date). We urge all stakeholders to remain vigilant and remind everyone that, until proven otherwise, any fever upon return from an endemic area should be considered a case of malaria.

Influenza and influenza-like illness

  • Very low health and virological indicators.

Bronchiolitis in children under 2 years of age

  • Health and virological indicators at a low level.

COVID-19

  • Health and virological indicators at a low level despite an upward trend since the beginning of the year.

Gastroenteritis

  • Fluctuating activity at a low level, with an upward trend since Week 7 among children under 5 years of age.
