COVID-19: Epidemiological Update for Mayotte as of January 5, 2022

Key Points

Indicators continue to deteriorate rapidly. The incidence of COVID-19 rose from 106 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in week 51 to 812 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in week 52, representing a sevenfold increase in cases over the course of a week. This sharp increase in incidence is due to the accelerated spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in Mayotte, particularly the Omicron variant, which is now the dominant strain in the territory. At this time, the epidemic shows no signs of slowing down.
