COVID-19 and Other Respiratory Viruses in Réunion. Update as of March 17, 2022.
Key Points
COVID-19
After six consecutive weeks of decline in the incidence rate, it rose slightly in week 10, with the rate climbing back above 1,000 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. The positivity rate remained stable, and new hospital admissions and admissions to intensive care units declined in week 10.
The number of weekly deaths recorded in Réunion remained stable in week S-10. The excess mortality observed since the beginning of the year based on INSEE data has not been observed since week S-08.
The Omicron variant accounted for 100% of interpretable sequences since week S-06, with a marked increase in BA.2 since week S-05, representing the majority (54%) of Omicron sublineages in week S-08.
An increase in the circulation of respiratory syncytial virus is observed among children under 2 years of age.
Bronchiolitis
Transition to the pre-epidemic phase.
Emergency department visits for bronchiolitis remained stable but at a high level in Week 10 (n=69) compared to the previous week (n=65). The number of hospitalizations following an emergency department visit was also stable or even slightly higher in Week 10 (34 in Week 10 vs. 28 in Week 09). La Réunion remains in the pre-epidemic phase relative to the defined thresholds. Hospital virological surveillance confirms the circulation of RSV types A and B.
Influenza
Following an increase in emergency department visits for influenza-like illness (n=14) without, however, exceeding epidemic thresholds, surveillance indicators returned to their baseline levels in W-09 and W-10. Hospital virological surveillance has not identified any influenza-positive biological samples since February 2022.
