Contaminated Sites and Soils: Gaining a Better Understanding of the Concerns of Orbiel Valley Residents to Better Support Them. Summary of the Exploratory Survey on Expectations and the Local Context Conducted in 2021–2022
For more than twenty years, pollution from former mining sites in the Orbiel Valley (Salsigne, Occitanie)—which has raised environmental and health concerns—has been the subject of several health studies among the local population (see the Orbiel report on the Santé publique France website). The floods that occurred in October 2018 reignited residents’ concerns. The Occitanie Regional Health Agency (ARS) then consulted Santé publique France on the appropriateness of conducting new health studies (see ARS 2019 referrals). In response, a “public health” initiative was launched to give residents the opportunity to express their concerns, questions, and expectations. This initiative, which required the application of sociological expertise, was entrusted to the University of Toulouse-Jean Jaurès and the CNRS (UT2J, MSHST UAR3414, CERTOP UMR5044), which, in partnership with Santé publique France, conducted the PRiOR study: "Practices and Perceptions of Risks Among Residents Living Along the Orbiel Valley" (see the PRiOR page and educational materials).
