Lead poisoning screening in the town of Saint-Laurent-le-Minier (Gard), May 2005

The town of Saint-Laurent-le-Minier in the Gard department has been a center of significant mining activity since ancient times. This activity ceased in 1995. A simplified risk assessment conducted by the town hall in 2005 revealed very high levels of soil contamination, particularly in the hamlet of La Papeterie, which was built on an industrial wasteland. Among the pollutants identified, measured lead concentrations were 25 to 150 times higher than the target soil concentration levels. Measures were adopted to ban the sale of agricultural products and prohibit the consumption of produce from home gardens, and a screening campaign for lead poisoning among children, pregnant women, and nursing mothers was implemented in the municipality. At the same time, additional environmental studies were conducted. Forty-one children aged 6 months to 18 years—representing 56% of the affected children—and three pregnant or breastfeeding women participated in the screening campaign. Blood lead levels exceeding 100 μg/L were detected in two children. 14% of the children screened had blood lead levels between 10 and 99 μg/L, and 80% had levels below 10 μg/L. No cases of lead poisoning were detected among pregnant or breastfeeding women. Children with blood lead levels exceeding 100 μg/L received medical follow-up, and a home survey helped better characterize their exposures (dust and consumption of fruits and vegetables from the garden). Analysis of the blood lead levels of children living in the hamlet of La Papeterie confirmed the high level of contamination at this site, and a decontamination operation was authorized for the area. Recommendations were issued to families and local physicians to ensure that children residing in the municipality who had not participated in the screening could undergo blood lead level testing. Measures regarding the avoidance of consuming garden produce and personal hygiene were maintained throughout the municipality pending the results of a detailed soil study of the entire municipal territory.
