Public Health Surveillance in the Midi-Pyrénées Region. Epidemiological Update as of September 11, 2013.

Key finding: Persistence of secondary cases since the outbreak of acute shigellosis-associated gastroenteritis in Ariège in July 2013

In late July 2013, an outbreak of acute Shigella gastroenteritis occurred in the department of Ariège (see PE301). Since this outbreak, the identification of several recent clusters of secondary cases indicates that Shigella is still actively spreading in the department of Ariège and neighboring departments. In this context, it is important to note that Shigella, a strictly human and highly contagious bacterium, is transmitted via the fecal-oral route following direct or indirect contact with an infected person. Poor hygiene conditions or the preparation of meals by infected individuals facilitate its transmission.Consequently, vigilance is advised regarding the occurrence of cases of acute gastroenteritis suggestive of shigellosis, particularly in community care settings (daycare centers, schools). It is also important to note that prompt management of cases reduces the risk of spread to others.
