Public Health Surveillance in the Midi-Pyrénées Region. Epidemiological Update as of November 18, 2011.
Important Reminder - As the cold weather sets in, be on the lookout for carbon monoxide poisoning
Carbon monoxide is a toxic, odorless, invisible, and non-irritating gas that causes headaches, nausea, fatigue, dizziness, or even muscle paralysis. Its effects can be rapid: in the most severe cases, it can lead to coma or even death within minutes. According to data from the surveillance system established by the French Institute for Public Health Surveillance (based on information from the Regional Health Agency, departmental fire and rescue services, the poison control and toxicovigilance center, and hospital emergency departments…), 85 cases of carbon monoxide poisoning occurred in Midi-Pyrénées in 2010, affecting 245 people, 70 of whom were hospitalized. Carbon monoxide also caused the deaths of four people. The majority of these poisonings occurred accidentally in the home (80%), 8% in the workplace, and 6% in public facilities. The appliances most often responsible for accidental domestic poisonings were boilers (46%) and water heaters (11%). The most common devices involved in poisoning incidents were portable space heaters (17%), braziers, barbecues, or stoves (14%). Factors contributing to poisoning include, in 58% of cases, inadequate ventilation (poorly maintained chimney flues, blocked air inlets and outlets, etc.), in one-third of cases a device malfunction, and in one out of ten cases, improper use of the device. To prevent these poisonings, the recommendations are simple: inspect the appliance before use (installation and exhaust ducts), ensure adequate ventilation in the home, and use the appliances properly (location, duration of use).
