Public Health Surveillance in Languedoc-Roussillon. Epidemiological Update as of August 16, 2012

Key points:

  • Hospital Activity: Several instances of exceeding statistical thresholds were noted. Activity in emergency departments and the SAMU was likely influenced by the August 15 holiday: - In the Aude department: statistical thresholds for emergency department visits by children under 1 year of age and adults aged 75 and older were just reached on August 14 and 15; - In the Gard department: a high number of hospitalizations was noted for August 14 (the highest observed in the last two months); the same was true for emergency room visits by those aged 75 and older on the same day. - In Hérault: Although several thresholds were exceeded regarding the total number of emergency room visits, other indicators remained stable. - In the Pyrénées-Orientales: the total number of emergency room visits exceeded the statistical threshold defined for the department, and at the same time, there was an increase in visits by those aged 75 and older. It should also be noted that among emergency room visits, the proportion of patients not usually residing in the region is 30%, the highest observed over the three years represented.

  • Summer SurveillanceThe indicators monitored as part of summer surveillance (malaise and heat index) are relatively stable.

  • Vector-borne disease surveillanceOver the past 7 days, 4 new reports of suspected cases of chikungunya or dengue have been recorded. No locally acquired cases have been detected to date.
