Languedoc-Roussillon Public Health Bulletin. No. 14 – June 2015.

Acute bronchiolitis in infants affects about one-third of children under 2 years of age each season. It is a very common reason for visits to hospital emergency departments, with a peak in incidence during the second half of December. It is the leading cause of hospitalization among infants under 1 year of age.The majority of cases are managed on an outpatient basis by general practitioners and pediatricians; this care and follow-up involve the participation of physical therapists, who, in collaboration with community physicians, have established more or less formal structures for physical therapy care and the follow-up of these cases of bronchiolitis in infants. This means that it is a public health issue requiring significant resources and budgets. Epidemiological surveillance allows for the anticipation of necessary resources and analysis aimed at optimizing practices. In particular, a study is currently underway on regional disparities in hospitalization rates for acute bronchiolitis.
