COVID-19: Epidemiological Update for Occitanie as of January 21, 2021

Key Points

Accelerating viral circulation in the regions of Occitanie, primarily among adults and older adults

In Week 2, COVID-19 syndromic surveillance indicators (use of emergency care, visits to private practices) continued to rise at the regional level.

Virological indicators (incidence and positivity rates) were also rising in at least 5 of the region’s 13 departments (stable or slightly decreasing in the others). However, the increases in incidence rates were limited to adults, particularly the oldest adults.

Weekly numbers of new hospital admissions were stable compared to the previous week. In contrast, admissions to intensive care units continued to rise at the regional level and in at least 7 of the region’s 13 departments.

As of January 19, R-Effectif estimates for Occitanie were significantly above 1 for all three data sources: SI-DEP, OSCOUR®, and SI-VIC.

Regarding mortality data, the weekly number of deaths from all causes observed in the region was increasing in Week 1, particularly in Haute-Garonne (with an estimated significant excess). The number of hospital deaths was also increasing at the regional level in Week 2.

The upward trend in COVID-19 indicators continues in several regions. This trend reflects an intensification of viral circulation (virological indicators at high levels) affecting adults in particular.
