Public Health Surveillance in the Poitou-Charentes Region. Epidemiological Update as of March 14, 2014.

Headlines - Air Pollution Episode

For several days now, weather conditions in the region have been characterized by a high-pressure system with light winds and mild afternoon temperatures, conditions that favor both the accumulation of pollutants (from vehicle traffic, industrial activities, and emissions from the residential and commercial sectors) and the formation of particulate matter. The "ATMO Poitou-Charentes" association has issued several pollution information and alert bulletins in the region in recent days regarding exceedances of particulate matter thresholds. Epidemiological studies document the short-term health impacts of air pollution. Particulate matter, in particular, is associated with an increase in all-cause mortality and an increase in hospitalizations for respiratory and cardiovascular causes. The regional InVS unit (Cire), using the SurSaUD® syndromic surveillance system, can monitor these impacts by analyzing overall activity as well as reports of asthma, fainting, dyspnea/acute respiratory failure, chronic bronchitis, heart failure, myocardial ischemia, and headaches in emergency departments and at SOS Médecins 17. Current data analysis does not indicate a significant short-term increase in these indicators compared to previous weeks or the same period last year. However, several studies have shown that there does not appear to be a protective threshold below which no health impact is observed. The health effects of air pollution are observed even at the lowest concentrations, even in the absence of pollution “spikes.” Thus, given the relative rarity of air pollution spikes in the region over the course of a year, the health impact of air pollution is primarily due to background levels of air pollution. Several cohort studies have shown that the long-term impact of chronic exposure to air pollution is significantly greater in terms of mortality or life expectancy than the short-term impacts observed.
