Public Health Surveillance in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Region. Epidemiological Update as of September 26, 2017.

Key Points

Mortality: Mortality in week 37 (taking into account the data consolidation period) is close to the expected level for this period across all age groups. The trend is the same at the national level.

Emergency department visits by vulnerable populations: Activity in emergency departments is on the rise in both age groups concerned, particularly among children under 1 year of age, with figures close to the alert threshold. In this age group, the most common conditions observed in emergency departments are ENT infections, isolated fever, and bronchiolitis.

Virology: The number of positive respiratory virus samples from the laboratories at the Bordeaux, Poitiers, and Limoges university hospitals increased in week 38 (50 positive samples). At the Poitiers and Bordeaux university hospitals, the majority were rhinovirus/enterovirus (27 and 10 samples, respectively). No samples tested positive at the Limoges university hospital.

Notifiable Diseases (ND): The number of reported hepatitis cases has continued to decline since week 35. No cases of measles were reported in week 38. Measles remains endemic in the region.

Chikungunya, Dengue, and Zika – Enhanced surveillance in Nouvelle-Aquitaine: Since May 1, when enhanced surveillance began in the region’s departments colonized by Aedes albopictus (depts. 24, 33, 40, 47, and 64), 62 suspected cases have been reported. In total, 8 cases of dengue, 1 case of chikungunya, and 4 imported cases of Zika have been confirmed.

Asthma: Following the increase observed at the start of the school year, asthma activity among children under 15 declined in week 38. However, it remains significant, dropping from 4.6% to 3.3% (111 consultations) of total activity at SOS Médecins and from 6.0% to 4.5% (254 visits) of total activity in the Oscour® network among children under 15.
