Public Health Surveillance in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Region. Epidemiological Update as of October 5, 2017.

Key Points

Mortality: Mortality in week 38 (taking into account the time required to consolidate data) is close to the expected level for this period across all age groups. The trend is the same at the national level.

Emergency department visits by vulnerable populations: Emergency department activity is stable, close to the alert threshold for children under 1 year of age; in this age group, the most common conditions observed in the emergency department are ENT infections, isolated fever, and trauma. Emergency department activity for those aged 75 and older remains below what is expected for this period.

Virology: The number of positive respiratory virus samples from the laboratories at the Bordeaux, Poitiers, and Limoges university hospitals increased in week 39 (79 positive samples). At the Poitiers and Bordeaux university hospitals, the increase in positive samples for rhinovirus/enterovirus continues (47 and 22 samples, respectively). No samples were positive at the Limoges university hospital.

Notifiable Diseases (ND): The hepatitis A outbreak is still ongoing in Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Active circulation of the measles virus is being observed in the region.

Chikungunya, Dengue, and Zika – Enhanced Surveillance in Nouvelle-Aquitaine: Since May 1, when enhanced surveillance began in the region’s departments colonized by Aedes albopictus (depts. 24, 33, 40, 47, and 64), 62 suspected cases have been reported. In total, 9 cases of dengue, 1 case of chikungunya, and 4 imported cases of Zika have been confirmed.

Asthma: Following the increase observed at the start of the school year, asthma activity among children under 15 continued to decline in week 39, falling from 3.3% to 2.4% (73 visits) of total SOS Médecins activity and from 4.5% to 3.4% (191 visits) of total Oscour® network activity among children under 15.
