Measles Surveillance in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Region. Epidemiological Update as of April 25, 2018.

Key Points

  • 996 cases reported in Nouvelle-Aquitaine (59% of which were in Gironde) between November 1, 2017, and April 25, 2018

  • A downward trend in the weekly number of cases in the region and its departments as of April 25, 2018; data from week 15 onward is still being consolidated

  • 24% occurred in clusters (universities, healthcare facilities, schools, prisons, the Traveler community, etc.)

  • 22% hospitalized (12 cases in intensive care, 1 death)

  • 83% inadequately vaccinated (self-reported), insufficient vaccination coverage (71–81% with 2 doses by age 24 months depending on the department, compared to 95% needed to eliminate the disease)

  • 75% increase in MMR vaccine sales between early 2017 and early 2018 in the region (Source: wholesale distributors)

  • Circulation of only the D8 genotype of the virus in 2018 and the last two months of 2017 (Measles National Reference Center)
