Heat Waves and Health in Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Bulletin dated July 9, 2025.

Key Points

Weather Conditions in Nouvelle-Aquitaine

  • Following the heat wave that affected the region on June 21, a new heat wave hit the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region between June 29 and July 3, 2025. During this period, the Vienne department was placed under a red heat wave alert, while the other departments were placed under an orange heat wave alert.

Analysis of syndromic indicators

  • The use of emergency care for all causes (Oscour® hospital emergency rooms and SOS Médecins), across all age groups and among those aged 75 and older, remained within the usual fluctuations for the period.

  • An increase in activity at SOS Médecins and hospital emergency departments for the iCanicule indicator (hyperthermia, dehydration, and hyponatremia) was observed during the heat wave. All age groups were affected, but higher utilization was recorded among people aged 75 and older (hospital emergency departments) and among those aged 15–44 and children under 15 (in SOS Médecins associations).

  • The activity levels recorded by iCanicule were higher than those observed during the summer of 2022 (when several departments had issued red heatwave alerts in June) but remained below the levels observed during the summer of 2019.
