Heat Waves and Health in Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Bulletin dated August 13, 2025.
Key Points
Weather Conditions in Nouvelle-Aquitaine
Since August 9, 2025, a new heat wave has been underway in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. On August 11, six departments in the region (Charente, Charente-Maritime, Dordogne, Gironde, Landes, Lot-et-Garonne) were placed under a red heat wave alert, while the region’s six other departments were placed under an orange heat wave alert.
Analysis of syndromic indicators
The use of emergency care for all causes (hospital emergency rooms [Oscour®] and SOS Médecins), across all age groups and among those aged 75 and older, remained within the usual fluctuations for this time of year.
An increase in activity at SOS Médecins and hospital emergency departments for the iCanicule indicator (hyperthermia, dehydration, and hyponatremia) was observed during the heatwave. All age groups were affected; however, a slight increase in visits by people aged 75 and older was observed in hospital emergency departments. In addition, an increase in visits among those aged 15–74 was observed on August 11.
Heat poses a health risk to the entire population. The observed health impacts underscore the importance of implementing preventive measures to mitigate the effects of heat. The “Living with Heat” website provides solutions for adapting daily life as temperatures rise.
