COVID-19: Epidemiological Update for Nouvelle-Aquitaine as of May 28, 2020

Key indicators

Virological Surveillance

  • SI-DEP (screening information system): The positivity rate for SARS-CoV-2 tests was 1.5% in the second half of 2020. The highest incidence rates were observed in the departments of Vienne and Deux-Sèvres.

Community-based surveillance

  • SOS Médecins: activity remains stable but low, with 250 cases for suspected COVID-19 in S21-2020, representing 4% of total activity (243 cases, or 4%, in S20)

Surveillance in long-term care facilities, including nursing homes

  • 1,851 cases among residents as of May 25, 2020, including 825 confirmed cases (1,781 cases, including 802 confirmed, as of May 18, 2020)

  • 212 deaths as of May 25, 2020 (208 deaths as of May 18, 2020)

Hospital surveillance

  • Oscour® Network

    • Stable activity in emergency departments for COVID-19 in Week 21 of 2020, with 296 visits for suspected COVID-19, representing 1% of total hospital emergency department activity (1% in Week 20 of 2020)

    • The hospitalization rate following visits for suspected COVID-19, an indicator of severity upon arrival at the emergency department, is declining (36% in Week 21 of 2020)

  • Sentinel intensive care units: among the 285 severe cases recorded by the units in this network, the majority are men (73%), are aged 65 and older (50%), and have at least one risk factor (79%); note that more than one-third of the cases in this network come from another region (n=92).

Cluster surveillance

  • 13 clusters (excluding nursing homes and close family settings) were identified from May 9 to May 27, 2020

Mortality surveillance

  • As of May 26, 2020, 388 deaths with COVID-19 listed as a cause were reported by hospitals in Nouvelle-Aquitaine

  • Among the 448 deaths with COVID-19 mentioned in electronic death certificates, 60% had known comorbidities and 77% were aged 75 or older

  • No excess all-cause mortality was detected through week S20-2020 (May 11–17, 2020) at the departmental and Nouvelle-Aquitaine regional levels
