COVID-19: Epidemiological Update for Nouvelle-Aquitaine as of April 23, 2020

Estimated number of confirmed COVID-19 cases*

  • From January 21 to April 21, 2020, 3,644 cases of COVID-19 were confirmed in Nouvelle-Aquitaine (+416 cases since April 14; 117,324 cases in France)

Surveillance of hospital and private laboratories

  • The proportion of positive tests for SARS-CoV-2 is declining in both hospital and private laboratories.

  • The departments of Vienne, Haute-Vienne, Corrèze, Creuse, and Gironde have the highest incidence rates

Community-based surveillance

  • SOS Médecins: Decline in COVID-19 activity for the third consecutive week, with 448 cases due to suspected COVID-19 in Week 16 of 2020, representing 7% of total activity (548 cases, or 10%, in Week 15)

  • Private laboratories (3 labs): 3% of tests were positive in Week 16 of 2020 (6% in Week 15 of 2020), compared to an average of 11% in France

Surveillance in long-term care facilities, including nursing homes

  • 1,343 cases, including 151 deaths reported as of April 21, 2020 (compared to 1,064 cases, including 113 deaths as of April 14, 2020)

Surveillance in hospitals

  • Oscour® Network

    • Decrease in emergency department activity for COVID-19 for the third consecutive week, with 863 visits for suspected COVID-19 in Week 16 of 2020, representing 6% of total hospital emergency department activity (1,219 visits, or 8%, in Week 15 of 2020)

    • The hospitalization rate following visits for suspected COVID-19, an indicator of severity upon arrival at the emergency department, remains high in Week 16 of 2020 (51% compared to 54% in Week 15), particularly among those aged 65 and older (81% in Week 16 of 2020)

  • Hospital laboratories at the Bordeaux, Limoges, and Poitiers university hospitals: 7% of tests were positive in Week 16 of 2020 (12% in Week 15 of 2020)

  • Sentinel intensive care units: among the 211 severe cases recorded by this network’s units, the majority are men (72%), aged 65 and older (49%), and have at least one risk factor (75%); note that more than one-third of the cases in this network come from another region (n=77)

Mortality surveillance

  • As of April 21, 2020, 266 deaths with COVID-19 listed as a cause were reported by hospitals in Nouvelle-Aquitaine

  • Among the 306 deaths with COVID-19 mentioned in electronic death certificates, 62% had known comorbidities and 77% were aged 75 or older

  • No excess all-cause mortality was detected through week S15-2020 (March 6 to April 12, 2020) at the departmental and Nouvelle-Aquitaine regional levels
