2023 Rugby World Cup in Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Update as of September 12, 2023.

Key Points

During Week 36, the city of Bordeaux hosted the following matches:

  • Ireland vs. Romania, Saturday, September 9

  • Wales vs. Fiji, Sunday, September 10

Activity across all causes (hospital emergency rooms and SOS Médecins):

  • Increased use of emergency rooms on September 9 and 10 (nearly 100 additional visits compared to usual levels) in the Bordeaux Métropole area, and a marked increase in calls to SOS Médecins Bordeaux on September 10 and 11 (approximately 70 additional calls). This increase is nevertheless expected given the influx of tourists.

Activity for monitored conditions (hospital emergency departments and SOS Médecins):

  • A slight increase in the number of cases of acute gastroenteritis on September 10 and 11 according to SOS Médecins data; however, the proportion of activity related to this syndrome group remains within the ranges observed in recent weeks.

Health alerts in the context of the event

  • Several clinical cases of foodborne botulism linked to the consumption of the same homemade food item at a restaurant in Bordeaux have been reported. At this stage, a link to the Rugby World Cup has not been established. Investigation is ongoing.
