Descriptive epidemiology of emergency department visits for acute alcohol poisoning in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region between 2016 and 2021

Objective - The objective of this study is to describe emergency department visits for acute alcohol intoxication (AAI) in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region and in the various departments within that region. Materials and Methods - Emergency department visits (EDVs) from the Oscour® database (Organization for Coordinated Emergency Surveillance) were analyzed from January 1, 2016, to December 31, 2021. Visits for AAI were defined using a set of ICD-10 codes (International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, 10th Revision). A descriptive analysis of patient characteristics, as well as seasonal variations, was conducted at the regional and departmental levels. Results - Over the study period, 78,325 ED visits for AHF were identified. Nearly 1% of all emergency department visits in the region were for non-emergency admissions, half of which were followed by hospitalization. These visits primarily involved men (71%). The most represented age groups were 40–54 years (33%) and 25–39 years (24%). Two annual peaks were observed: January 1 and June 22. Peak emergency department visit times occurred between 8:00 PM and 11:00 PM, with a shift to 2:00–3:00 AM among those aged 15–24. Emergency department visits for AEs were higher on weekends, holidays, and the days before holidays. During the study period, the number of visits for AEs and the proportion of men decreased, while the average age increased. Conclusion - In Nouvelle-Aquitaine, visits for AEs have a significant impact on emergency department activity. This study identified periods of high volume of emergency department visits for AEs across the region.
