Tuberculosis in Normandy. 2023 Report.
Key Points
Online Reporting
In Normandy, the rate of electronic reporting of tuberculosis (via the e-DO app) is higher than the national rate but has not increased since the last quarter of 2022.
Trends in the incidence of active tuberculosis
Normandy is among the regions with the lowest incidence of active tuberculosis.
This rate remained stable in the region (4.7 cases per 100,000 inhabitants) in 2023 compared to previous years. The regional rate in 2023 was lower than the rates recorded in the years preceding the pandemic.
Within the region, the highest reported rates are observed in the departments of Seine-Maritime (6.1 cases per 100,000 inhabitants) and Calvados (4.4 cases per 100,000 inhabitants).
Characteristics of people with active tuberculosis
The incidence of tuberculosis is twice as high among men as among women.
The 25–39 age group accounts for the highest number of cases, while the 15–24 age group has the highest reported rate.
Reported cases of active tuberculosis primarily involve highly vulnerable individuals who have recently arrived from areas or countries with high tuberculosis endemicity.
Main clinical and epidemiological characteristics of active tuberculosis
Cases of pulmonary tuberculosis, either isolated or associated with extrapulmonary sites, remain the majority (66%).
The incidence of severe forms (meningoencephalitis or miliary tuberculosis) remains low (5% of cases) and has been stable in recent years.
The incidence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) tuberculosis—resistant to the two main first-line antituberculosis drugs (isoniazid and rifampicin)—remains low and stable in France and Normandy.
Treatment Outcomes
In terms of tuberculosis control performance indicators, information on treatment outcomes remains insufficient.
Treatment completion rates are approaching the WHO’s therapeutic success target (85%) but did not reach it in 2022 (76%), unlike in 2021 (87%).
Latent Tuberculosis Infections (LTIs)
The number of reported LTIs in Normandy increased in 2023.
The LTI cases detected and treated were primarily young men, aged 15 and older, who had arrived in France less than two years prior.
