Leading Causes of Death in Normandy. 2023 Report.
Key Points
In 2023, 35,652 deaths were recorded among residents of Normandy, representing a standardized rate of 864 per 100,000 inhabitants.
This mortality rate was lower than in 2022 (993 per 100,000 inhabitants) but higher than the national rate (798 per 100,000 inhabitants)
Male mortality remained higher than female mortality (1,137 per 100,000 men and 668 deaths per 100,000 women).
Tumors and diseases of the circulatory system were the two leading causes of death in the region and in each of Normandy’s departments. Their rates were slightly lower than in 2022. It is therefore necessary to continue efforts to prevent the risk factors for these diseases (tobacco, alcohol, sedentary lifestyle, etc.).
Among those under 65, the mortality rate was higher than the national rate (205 per 100,000 inhabitants in Normandy and 178 per 100,000 inhabitants in France, respectively). External causes (primarily driven by suicides and self-inflicted injuries) remained the second leading cause of death after tumors.
A sharp decline in Covid-19 mortality was observed in 2023, with the disease becoming the 11th leading cause of death.
The mortality rate for each department in Normandy was higher than the national rates, ranging from 831 per 100,000 inhabitants in Calvados to 885 in Eure.
