Investigation into a suspected cluster of cancers in Draveil (Essonne)

The occurrence of several cases of cancer among students and parents of students attending schools in Belvédère (municipality of Draveil, Essonne) in recent years has raised questions about the situation and prompted speculation regarding possible environmental exposure. At the request of the town hall, the Ddass 91 and the Cire Île-de-France conducted investigations. In Draveil, from 2000 to 2008, 9 cases of cancer in children under 15 were observed; there is no excess incidence of pediatric cancers. No geographic clustering of the residences of these cases was observed. There is therefore no spatio-temporal cluster of pediatric cancers in Draveil. The environmental investigation did not identify any source of environmental exposure likely to expose the population of Draveil in particular. The distribution of cell towers in Draveil and its surroundings appeared uniform, and all measured electromagnetic field values were well below current standards (28 V/m). Given the consistency of these results, it was concluded that there were no grounds to further pursue investigations regarding this report. (R.A.)
