Suicidal Behavior in Île-de-France. 2023 Report.

Key points

Emergency room visits and hospitalizations among adolescent girls and young women are on the rise:

  • In 2023, 9,611 emergency room visits due to suicide attempts were recorded in Île-de-France (-2.7% compared to 2022). In 2023, young women accounted for the majority of patients treated in emergency rooms for suicide attempts.

  • In 2023, 9,176 hospitalizations for self-harm were recorded in Île-de-France, representing a standardized rate of 72 hospitalizations per 100,000 inhabitants (+1.0% compared to 2022). The highest crude hospitalization rate was among young women aged 11 to 17.

  • Since 2019, the standardized hospitalization rate for women has remained stable at 95 hospitalizations per 100,000 women, while it has decreased for men, falling from 59 to 48 hospitalizations per 100,000 men.

Older men are more vulnerable to the risk of death by suicide:

  • In 2021, nearly 950 suicide deaths were recorded, corresponding to a standardized rate of 8 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants (-7.4% compared to 2020). In 2021, 66.6% of suicide deaths involved men. Between 2019 and 2021, the age-standardized death rate for men decreased slightly from 13 to 11 deaths per 100,000 men, while it remained stable for women (at 5 deaths per 100,000 women).
